RISE - Re-employment Incentive Scheme for Employers

What is RISE and how can it help you get back to work with a new employer?

WorkCover aims to support you to return to work. Part of the solution is providing a program for employers to encourage them to employ injured workers in full-time, part-time or casual positions. This program is called the Re-employment Incentive Scheme for Employers (RISE). Providing you with a ‘second chance’ and an opportunity to return to meaningful and ongoing employment is an important step in your recovery.

How does RISE work?

If you have capacity for work but cannot return to your pre-injury employer, your Employers Mutual case manager and/or your workplace rehabilitation provider* will consider other suitable employment opportunities for you.

Where an employer makes a job vacancy available through the RISE program, the job will be advertised to you via your case manager and/or workplace rehabilitation provider.

Your case manager and/or workplace rehabilitation provider will ensure the job meets the RISE criteria and that you have doctor’s approval to undertake the job before you apply for the vacancy. Where the employer is interested, they then meet with you and if you are successful in the job application, your workplace rehabilitation provider will arrange approval for RISE benefits and support through Employers Mutual. They may also assess whether any training or equipment is required to help you do the job safely. You then begin work as per any other contract of employment.

Please note that if you find a job vacancy that you think is suitable, you can discuss this with your case manager or workplace rehabilitation provider and they can explain to the employer that hiring you under the RISE program offers them benefits.

*If you are being considered for a job through RISE and you don’t currently have a workplace rehabilitation provider, you will be allocated one by your case manager.

What is considered suitable employment?

Suitable employment involves you doing pre-injury or alternative tasks based on the medical assessment of your capabilities. It also includes other factors, such as previous employment, age, education, skills, work experience and place of residence. The workplace rehabilitation provider will help you assess what is considered suitable employment and ensure the work meets the relevant criteria. Work could be on a full-time, part-time or casual basis.
