People involved in your rehabilitation

Case manager

The person employed by Employers Mutual or a self-insured employer to manage your claim. Case managers are sometimes called claims managers or injury managers. You can expect your case manager to:

  • manage your claim and maintain contact with you
  • monitor and review your progress
  • make decisions and payments on your claim according to
the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986.

Employer

The company you worked for at the time of your injury. You can expect your employer to:

  • provide suitable employment unless it is not reasonably practical to do so
  • do what is listed in your rehabilitation and return to work plan
  • not sack you without giving you and WorkCover 28 days’ notice.

Treating practitioners

The doctor, specialist and any other health providers like a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or psychologist, who may be involved in treating you. These are sometimes called (medical) rehabilitation consultants.

Workplace rehabilitation consultant

A suitably qualified person who is usually appointed by your case manager to help you, your employer and treating practitioners to get you safely back to work. Self-insured employers may use their own internal rehabilitation consultants. You can expect your workplace rehabilitation
consultant to:

  • talk to you about your return to work
  • give you information about the rehabilitation and return to work process in a way you can easily understand
  • involve you in the development of your rehabilitation and return to work plan
  • keep all parties informed about your progress
  • keep your personal information confidential.

Self-insured employers

Employers that fund and manage their own workers rehabilitation and compensation claims are known as self-insured employers. Generally self-insured employers are large companies (or government) that employ more than 200 workers.
