Hints for getting back to and staying at work

If you've been hurt at work, you'll probably need some extra support to get back on your feet. You're entitled to assistance from the WorkCover system - there's nothing wrong with accepting a little help!

Ask your treating doctor to detail the activities you can and can't do on your WorkCover Medical Certificate eg, limitations, difficulties with bending, lifting, repeated movements, etc.

Depending on how big it is, your workplace may have a rehabilitation and return to work coordinator, a health and safety representative or an occupational health and safety (OHS) coordinator - talk to them or your manager about your needs and issues in returning to work or doing your job.

You and your supervisor should stay in touch even if you are off work. Talk to them about progress and the parts of your job you think you can do. Getting back to work will help your recovery.

Talk to your case manager if you feel a workplace rehabilitation consultant or occupational therapist may help you get back to work.

Make sure you follow your rehabilitation and return to work plan (if you have one) and if you feel it should be reviewed, talk to your case manager about it.

Work safely and always be mindful of your injury or illness – be careful not to aggravate a condition by doing too much too soon.
