Appointing a Rehabilitation and return to work coordinator
Employers with 30 or more workers must appoint a rehabilitation and return to work coordinator to help you and your worker in the return to work process. A coordinator is responsible for managing rehabilitation and return to work efforts in the workplace and is required to undertake appropriate training.
It makes sense to appoint a coordinator – after all, it has been shown that early intervention when workers are injured reduces the cost of claims – and that makes financial sense for you as it can keep the cost of your levy down.
WorkCover have published a manual All you need to know about rehabilitation and return to work coordinators which outlines what is required from employers and coordinators to help you understand this new role.
For more information about coordinators contact the Return to Work Inspectorate and Support Unit on 13 18 55 or email rrtwc-support@workcover.com.
What are the benefits of having a coordinator?
- They will facilitate the return to work process, and your worker and your business should recover sooner as a result
- Your coordinator will stay in contact with the injured worker
- They can liaise with all the parties involved on your behalf, such as case managers, health providers and the vocationalrehabilitation providers
- They can organise suitable employment and modified duties where necessary
- They can also enlist the help of supervisors and co-workers in supporting your injured worker.
Employers who employ more than 30 workers are required to appoint trained rehabilitation and return to work coordinators in accordance with Section 28D of the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986.
Employers who fit this criteria will initially be notified during the employer registration process.
Employers who wish to commence the appointment process and are seeking information about training courses or recognition of prior learning processes may wish to contact any of the following WorkCover approved training providers:
