Patient fact sheets

These fact sheets have been developed as resources for health providers to give to injured workers. The information contained in the fact sheets is based on existing national and international guidelines. The fact sheets provide the worker with best practice care information about their injury and promote self-management strategies.

 

Acute knee injuries

The provision of information and education about the injury is an important intervention, which can promote effective self management of symptoms. A number of fact sheets are available to provide to an injured worker. Examples include:

Acute-subacute low back pain

Providing accurate and positive information about the natural history of acute low back pain (advice that the condition is common, short lived, and that a good prognosis is expected [1]) is an important intervention.   • Explain the benign nature of the complaint.
  • Be assuring that the complaint will pass.
  • Make reference to the evidence in this regard.
  • Prescribe time-contingent paracetamol, if required (GP).
'I can't move'
  • Provide an understandable explanation of how much pain causes muscle guarding.
  • Explain the benign nature of this phenomenon.
  • Demonstrate simple stretching exercises.
  • See that the patient can perform these exercises.
  • Other treatment options and advise as per guidelines.
